One Month Countdown!

Before I get to the countdown, I just wanted to thank you guys once more for your support about my allergy testing!  I got the awful patches off yesterday morning … thank goodness!  I found out I am allergic to nickel and thimerosal.  Thimerasol is a compound with antiseptic and antifungal properties.  It is commonly used in nose, eye, and ear medications, antiseptic sprays, and vaccines.  I had a MAJOR reaction to it so basically it is on the major “no no” list for me.  Luckily it isn’t absurdly common so it should be relatively easy to avoid.  However, this didn’t really tell us what is going on with my skin … it just told when is not going on.  So I am going back Monday.

Any-who … I recently realized that I never updated you all on my moving situation!  If you follow me on twitter or Facebook this is old news BUT we are NOT moving to Hawaii.  Instead, Fort Stewart, outside of Savannah, GA will be our new home for the next 3ish years!

To say we are THRILLED would be an understatement.  There are SO many things I am looking forward to:

  • The restaurants.  Super excited to have more than 3 restaurants to choose from!
  • The history.  Savannah has historical significance all the way back to The Revolutionary War.  It also has a lot of Civil War Significance too.  Chris was a history major in college and I find battlefields fascinating so we are excited!
  • Target.  The bulls-eye is calling for me.  We don’t have a Target here at Fort Leonard Wood and I feel deprived.
  • The opportunities.  I can apply to graduate school in Savannah!  I am getting ready to chase some dreams.
  • The beer.  Apparently Savannah was one of “America’s Best Cities for Beer” according to Travel + Leisure Magazine
  • Southern hospitality.  There really isn’t anything else like it in the world :)
  • Chris’ Career.  Chris has an incredible career opportunity at Fort Stewart.  We are so excited for this next chapter in his military career.  :)

Needless to say I am incredibly excited and ready to get this show on the road!  At the same time I feel like we JUST moved … which I guess we did because we moved from Texas to Missouri in September haha.  We are one month away from the big move but less than that before our movers come.  Yes, the movers.  Unlike last time (when we moved ourselves) we are allowing the Army to move us this time.  Why?  We simply outgrew the biggest moving truck we could rent.  OOPS.

Here is our “to do” list:

  • Meet with transportation and schedule movers.  They’re coming April 9-10!
  • Turn in 30 day notice here.  DONE
  • Notify utilities here.  DONE
  • Get updated shot records for the dogs.
  • Vehicle maintenance.
  • Find a house in Savannah.
  • Determine what we are packing in our cars and separate it from the rest of the house.
  • Inventory household goods.
  • Clean house and patch holes.

Chris graduates Captain’s Career Course April 13.  We are running the Go! St. Louis Half-Marathon on April 15.  We are leaving Missouri April 17.  WHEW.  Hopefully we didn’t bite off more than we can chew 😉  Thank you for all your encouragement when I thought we were moving to Hawaii.  I am so grateful to have such an awesome community to be a part of.  However, I am so excited that my prayers were answered and we don’t have to learn to love aloha :)

Here’s to the next chapter of our Army adventure.  :)

  1. I’m sure you will LOVE Savannah. We live outside of Atlanta (not from GA though) and we visit Savannah often. Just ran the RnR Savannah Marathon there this past Nov. Friendly city. We are actually heading out to Hilton Head in two weeks. Fun area and lot’s to do. Shopping is good there too. My husband and I were both in the Air Force, so we know PCSing all to well. Fun Times :)

  2. I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now but haven’t yet commented.. just felt the need to let you know how AMAZING Savannah is.. I moved here last June. This weekend is St. Patty’s Day, and we have the 2nd biggest celebration in the country, behind NYC. Does your hubby know where he will be working yet? Hunter AAF is right in Savannah, but Ft. Stewart is in Hinesville, which is about an hour away from the city center. Anyway, I’m sure you will LOVE Savannah, it really is a fantastic southern city!

    1. Thanks for commenting! He is working at Fort Stewart but we are actually probably going to live in Richmond Hill or Georgetown. Our friend lives downtown in Savannah and says it takes him 45 minutes to get to Stewart so I am super excited to be halfway between the two :) And I am SO SO SO excited.

    1. Oh I will definitely be posting about restaurants 😉 Ahh yay weddings!!

  3. You are going to just love Savannah!! My best friend and her husband were there for the last couple of years and I visited every single chance I could get. If it weren’t for law school/family/my job, that would have been our first choice for our last duty station, too.

Our last move? Ha! We moved from Fort Riley to my in-law’s house while trying to sell our house and starting both of our new jobs. Did I mention that I was pregnant and a crazy hormonal whackjob living with my MIL for 7 months? Thankfully, our house sold and we bought our current house before any of us went insane :)

  4. Congratulations! My friend lived there for a while and LOVED it! AND, good luck in GO! St. Louis:) I love that race!!! Probably cause I’m from there and miss it, but good luck!

  5. Sounds like you are very excited about your move. That is awesome!

Sorry to hear about your allergy issues.

As for moving, the last time we moved was over 10 years ago from about 20 min. away, condo to house. Before that, I moved from VA to IL after dating Kev for 3 months, we got married and I moved to IL.

I do however have a major itch to move again and have for quite some time. I would like to downsize and ultimately would love to live somewhere warm all year round, umm like the Caribbean! But now that we have grands, we should really stay in the states for a while.

  6. I’m allergic to nickel now too! Crazy pills. Hope you figure out what’s going on soon.

Phil puts on O-3 in June and we just found out we’re getting stationed at Yongsan this fall for 2-3 years and it’s supposed to really accelerate the hubby’s career. Super excited!

We’ve had a really good experience with the movers paid for by the military so far and all the other Navy wives LOVE Savannah and would do anything to get stationed there again. Lucky you!

  7. Savannah is a BEAUTIFUL place. Such a fantastic place full of culture. You will LOVE it! My husband was a Marine stationed and recently got out so he could go to school. He’s at SCAD now majoring in Sound Design, so we spend lots of time downtown. Casey is right about St. Patty’s Day here. It is HUGE! And this year, I read rumors that he could top NYC’s celebration this year. I guess we’ll see on Saturday. LOL!!! And Molly is ABSOLUTELY right about Vinnie Van Goh Goh’s. It is my favorite place to go for pizza. Just bring cash! Georgetown is a nice area to live. I don’t know much about Richmond Hill, but you can find some good houses in Georgetown

  8. Richmond Hill is a nice little town and VERY family friendly..its far enough away from downtown that you miss out on the party atmosphere.. my boyfriend is a Naval officer that teaches ROTC at Savannah State, and we are getting ready to move out of our condo downtown to relocate to Richmond Hill.. its too crazy for us down in the middle of everything (lots of SCAD students partying all the time in the neighboring condos) and we can get a 3 BR house for what we’re paying on the 1 BR condo now.. you will love it, definitely a foodie’s paradise! If you haven’t had much BBQ, definitely acquaint yourself with Wiley’s on Whitemarsh Island when you get here!

  9. I’ve always wanted to visit Savannah GA!!! Good luck with your move and I hope that everything goes smoothly for you and your family :-) Gotta love the military! I just wrote a post today about my type A personality vs. the military and life in general. Funny that you wrote about this today!

  10. Very excited for you!! I am a new army wife and my hubby is being stationed in germany!! our 1st pcs is coming up soon! so excited – love reading your blog!

    1. That is SO exciting! My sister-in-law lives in Germany and we have several friends stationed there! They LOVE it! Experience all the travel you can :)

  11. So exciting! I was just browsing your blog and our stories are pretty similar-my husband deployed for a year right after we married (our daughter is a result of his rnr last january haha) and we have a little girl around the same age as yours! We just pcsd to charleston in November. I’m from upstate NY so it is quite the change! I’ve heard Savannah is gorgeous-we plan on taking a weekend getaway there at some point.

Congrats on the good news! Also, good call going with the movers. We moved ourselves and yeah-my husband had to go back to virginia to get the rest of our stuff-if only the truck were two feet longer! Moving ourselves with a seven week old was just plain crazy :p
