Squash for Josh 5K

Saturday morning Chris and I packed Emmie up and headed to J.F. Gregory Park for the first ever Squash for Josh 5K. If you can believe it, this was the first time I had ever raced a 5K! We met Heather, D, and Grace there and were ready to go!
I rocked my FitFluential #PROOF tank, Lululemon shorts, a Sparkly Soul Inc. headband, and Brooks Adrenalines. Heather is sporting my awesome For Two Fitness tank since she is running for 2 and all
Registration for the Squash for Josh 5K was online through Active.com. For $15 we got our entry fee and t-shirt. Packet pick-up was the day of and started at 7AM with the 5K starting at 9AM and a 1-mile fun run at 9:15AM. There were around 100 participants. The Squash for Josh 5K is in honor of a Joshua Moore who was murdered in 2011. All proceeds from the event went to the Richmond Hill Police Department and Crimestoppers Savannah. Definitely a cause I can get behind!
Packet pick-up went super smoothly and Chris was able to register that morning. My only complaint for the day was how the start was handled. The race director didn’t have a working microphone or loudspeaker so it was difficult to hear when was going on. The race also started late which is a personal pet peeve of mine. Being that this event wasn’t run by race professionals I kind of expected as much. With that being said though I was pleasantly surprised as to how smooth things went!
When the race started D and Chris took off. Chris was pushing Emmalyne so I was pretty surprised. Heather and I tried to stick together at a “conservative” pace. That pace ended up being around an 8 minute mile which I couldn’t maintain. I told Heather to go on without me and I settled back into a more comfortable pace.
The race course was the loop at J.F. Gregory Park which is where I do most of my training runs. It’s nice racing on a course that you know like the back of your hand. This was nice considering they didn’t post any mile markers etc. Around the half-way point though there were race volunteers handing out water which really impressed me!
Chris ended up finishing way ahead of me but check out his strong finish:
H finished in 23:32 for a pace of 7:35 minutes/mile WHILE pushing Em. This was a PR for him too! He also placed 4th overall male, 5th overall, and 1st in the “stroller division” that didn’t exist.
I finished in 27:14 for a pace of 8:47/mile. This was honestly faster than I thought I would finish so I am thrilled. Plus now I have a benchmark to beat for any upcoming 5Ks
Chris said that Emmie was a champ. We joke that since Chris won the strollers, she obviously won her age group. She was pretty thrilled
For being a small, local race, the post-race food was pretty nice. They handed out orange slices, Gatorades, water, cookies, and bananas.
Overall I had a lot of fun at the Squash for Josh 5K. I will definitely be participating in it next year. The faster finish was nice, but the best part of the race for me was doing it with my family.
Did you race this weekend? Do you like big races or little races better?

I’m doing my first 5k in November so I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t done one! Your time was incredible! I’m hoping to get in under 35 minutes. I was always to nervous to do one before but my bf and I are doing it together (his first as well) so now I’m excited we have something new to do as a couple.

I love smaller races to be honest but I don’t have much to base that off of, I’ve only done three 5k races so far. But I’m impressed at the food the offered you, at my last race the only post-run food offered was pizza and hot dogs, no veggie options either. It was enough to make me gag after all that effort.

I’m excited to run my first 10k race, though it will definitely be a big one! Hehehe!
Nice work on your first 5!

There’s no way I could eat pizza OR hot dogs post race … it makes me queasy thinking about it!

We are very excited that you and your family came out to run this past Saturday. Thank you for the review. You and your husband and sweet baby did a wonderful job! Very strong finish. Sorry about starting late and the non-working megaphone. I have already secured a PA system for next year’s race so that everyone will be able to hear. Also we plan to be on time next year with the 1Mile going first and then the 5k second. We appreciate your support! See you next year!
Thank you so much for hosting such a wonderful event! We look forward to participating next year. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help!
