It’s easy to forget the true meaning behind holidays sometimes. The 4th of July is synonymous with fireworks, BBQs, and time off of work. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment without taking a second to truly reflect WHY Independence Day is so important.
Today makes the 237th anniversary of the United States declaring its independence from England. Our forefathers (and mothers) took a stand against injustice and tyranny to change the course of history forever. They fought and earned our right to be known as Americans. Our men and women in uniform are still fighting that fight.
So while you are enjoying time with your family and BBQing and watching the fireworks, take a second and say a silent “thank you”. A thank you to the ones who have gone before, are serving now, and will serve in the years to come. I consider myself blessed beyond measure to have grown up in a country where the sky is the limit. That my children will have the opportunity to chase their dreams without fear. To live without abandon. To be able to speak their mind and have their opinion heard – no matter what party line they fall along.
Freedom isn’t free. It’s earned by those braver than I. Those who are willing to lay down their life so that we can cook up hamburgers and light sparklers. Words cannot do them justice and we are lucky they are such heroes amongst us.
I am off to celebrate today with my very own hero and our family is wishing you and yours a very happy Independence Day.
