Coffee Talk // 1

…. is this thing on?  I sure hope it is!  In case you all forgot … I’m Madeline.  And I have severely neglected this space for far too long.  The beautiful thing about stepping back from blogging is realizing how much you LOVED blogging to begin with.  So I am back in this space and ready to share my life again with all of you.  Those of you who have stuck with me … thank you!  I can’t wait to hear how life has been treating you :)  Now join me for some coffee talk!

If we were having coffee I would tell you that Emmalyne turned FIVE.  How could this be?  I swear it was yesterday I was announcing her arrival right here in this space.  She is shaping up to be the most extraordinary little girl.  She is loving, kind, creative, fun, thoughtful, and an absolute ray of sunshine.  She is a little introverted which can be challenging for my extroverted self, however, she is the first to befriend someone on the playground.  She cares deeply about others’ feelings and loves animals.  Her birthday party was Shopkins themed and she was so happy.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I have been practicing medicine for 6 months as of this week.  More on my thoughts on this on Wednesday but again, how did this happen?  I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that I am a practicing Physician Assistant living my dream.  I am slowly gaining more confidence and have earned the trust of my collaborating physicians … I even get to help teach our medical student right now!

If we were having coffee I would tell you that we have been enjoying Missouri so far.  We really live in the middle of nowhere but it has its charm.  We have gotten our and explored the area and have some new adventures on the horizon.  The closest Target is an hour away but even that is ok.  Our weekends are spent full of family time and I don’t think I would have it any other way.

If we were having coffee I would tell you about our Halloween.  We had a family party the weekend before and went as the gang from Little Red Riding Hood.  Emmie insisted on being the Big Bad Wolf but promptly changed to Little Red for the big show.  Bryn was the sweetest, and the smallest of our bunch.  While trick-or-treating she would yell, “Come on guys!  Let’s go to the next house” and hurry along as fast as her little legs could go.  She does not have a shy bone in her body.

If we were having coffee I would tell you I am trying to work on myself.  I am being honest here – I have gained over 10lbs since starting work.  I am sure it’s a contribution of the stress, lack of time, and exhaustion but I have been making VERY poor choices and not fitting in workouts.  We have a big trip in the spring that will involve bikinis and I am determined to use that as my motivation to get back on track.  Regardless of the bikini … I NEED to feel better.  When I eat like crap I have a perpetual cycle of feeling like garbage.  It needs to end.  I need my energy back!

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I am OBSESSED with this stage of life we are in.  Our family photos came back and I can’t believe how blessed and lucky I am to have these three as my people.

Your turn!  I need to catch up with all of you – so tell me, what would you tell me if we were having coffee?

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Favorites

I am late to the game with the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale but since my items arrived this week (and MOST are still available!) I felt compelled to share my favorite finds with you!  Since we are back in Missouri and winter will be WAY colder than it was in Georgia I am trying to build up my fall/winter wardrobe and this was a great opportunity.

Kate Spade New York “Forever” Stud Earrings

Kate Spade 'Forever' Studs

I am obsessed with these earrings.  I have been wearing them to work all week.  You can’t beat a classic pair of studs and these are perfection.

_Pleione Bell Sleeve Blouse

I love this blouse so much that I ordered it in a second color!  It is incredibly flattering and is the perfect for both work and play.

KUT from the Kloth “Diana” Stretch Skinny Jeans

Kut from the Kloth Diane

I have gotten a few pairs of KUT from the Kloth pants in my Stitch Fix boxes and really love the fit.  When I saw that these skinny jeans were in the anniversary sale for a better price I jumped at it.  They hug in all the right places.

Two by Vince Camuto Mixed Media V-Neck Tunic

Vinca Camuto Mixed Media Hi Low Blouse

This is a great top for fall and once again is really flattering.  I can just see it with my new Frye boots and jeans with a scarf!

Frye “Melissa Button’ Leather Riding Boot

Frye Melissa Button Riding Boot

These were my big splurge of the sale.  I have been eyeing the Frye boots for YEARS and finally took the plunge.  Since riding boots are my ‘go-to’ in the fall I know these will be worn a ton.  And there was just something about the genuine leather that was amazing.  The best part is that they are so incredibly comfortable!

Two By Vince Camuto Seamed Back Leggings

Vince Camuto Leggings

Do yourself a favor and order these leggings NOW.  They are high waisted which is fabulous for my mom-bod and thick enough that there is no issue with transparency.  They are so soft and truly great quality.

UGG ‘Anjeline’ Knit Cape

UGG Knit Cape

I was back and forth on this sweater and finally bit the bullet and ordered it tonight.  I haven’t gotten it yet but the reviews were good and it looks so warm and comfortable.

BP. Deep V-Neck Pullover

BP V-Neck Pullover

This over-sized sweater is going to be perfect paired with a button up.  I know it will work well with my slim work pants or with skinny jeans and my boots.

There you have it!  Some of my favorites from the sale and as I said they were pretty much ALL available as of last night!  The links do contain affiliate links FYI 😉

Master Bedroom Makeover

It’s been a few months since we moved to Missouri and we have been hard at work doing some fun room updates.  Our first project was our master bedroom.  Chris and I have had the same bedroom set for 9 years.  I bought it when I was a senior in college and the mattress he bought when he commissioned into the Army.  Unfortunately, it’s been a queen bed and since we have two tiny humans that somehow make their way into our room at any hour of the night, and we haven’t figured out how to kick them out, we needed something bigger.  I have been dreaming about a king bed for YEARS and it was the #1 item on my list of things to get as a new PA.

Master Bedroom 4

We bought our mattress from Haverty’s when they had a sweet deal.  And I have to say that it’s like sleeping on a cloud.  I swear I am sleeping SO much better and the amount of extra room we have is unbelievable.  Somestimes I feel like Chris is just SO far away but it’s been a life-saver when Emmalyne makes her way in.

Master Bedroom 2

We also got rid of our dark brown furniture in favor of white from IKEA.  I am obsessed with the Hemnes line and I feel like the weight of it is stronger than you would expect from IKEA.  Chris had a load of fun (insert sarcasm) putting it all together but the final outcome was worth it.  Since we also upgraded our sofa I was able to sneak our oversized chair into our room.  I’ve really enjoyed having a place to read that is NOT the bed.

Master Bedroom 3

Master Bedroom 5

Hanging up our art pieces completed the room.  The drawing was done by my niece Grace when Chris and I got married.  It’s a prized possession.  It makes me weepy to think about the fact that the little girl who so lovingly drew that picture and was our sweet flower girl is now starting high school.  Some black and white wedding photos had to make their way in too!

Finally, I made some new above the bed art.  I used PicMonkey to create our wedding date in a more modern way.  I love how it all came together!

Master Bedroom 6

I absolutely love how our bedroom came together and it makes me so happy every time I come home to it.  I love the white and black contrast with the pops of color and it just feels relaxing and fresh.  Below is a list of where things came from:

Winslow Metal Bed from Wayfair

Threshold White Seersucker Duvet from Target

Simply Shabby Chic® Snow White Bed Skirt from Target

Water Color Pillows from Target

Hemnes Collection from IKEA

Gold Lamps from Target

Sheer White Curtains from WalMart

There you have it!  Our new and improved master bedroom!

In the recent months since taking my boards I have been asked on a number of occasions what materials I used to prep for my PANCE.  This review has literally been in the works for MONTHS and I am excited to bring it to you today.  While I am getting a post together on all the resources I used for my boards I wanted to focus today on one in particular – the CME4LIFE PANCE/PANRE Board Review.

I was first introduced to the CME4LIFE Board Review through their amazing FB page.  They would post weekly questions and the school who had the most correct answers won and received a free copy of one of the DVDs.  My school won the hematology DVD and one viewing and I was hooked.  Back as I was preparing for my PANCE, John Bielinski and his team was kind enough to send me the entire set in exchange for a review.  Needless to say I was thrilled to do so.

CME4LIFE is owned by John Bielinski, PA-C.  John is a practicing physician assistant in New York and specializes in emergency medicine and family medicine.  He created the company after years of frustration when attending CME conferences. John is passionate about helping others learn and retain challenging information.

CME4Life offers a variety of products on their website but the one I was most interested in was the PANCE/PANRE review course.  The DVD set I received contains 17 CDs jam packed with information

  • Pharmacology
  • Gastrointestinal/Nutritional
  • Hematologic
  • Neurology
  • Cardiology
  • Pulmonary
  • EENT(Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat)
  • Endocrine
  • Genitourinary / Reproductive
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Dermatologic
  • Musculoskeletal
  • Psychiatry/Behavioral
  • Radiology
  • EKG Interpretation
  • Bugs and Drugs

What I Liked

  1. John makes the material easy to understand.  He breaks it down into simple terms and employs memory tricks to help you retain the information.
  2. There’s no wasted time.  If you have sat through other board reviews you know that sometimes a lot of valuable time is wasted on low-yield information.  Not the case with CME4LIFE.  All the information presented is relevant and high-yield.
  3. It’s entertaining.  I can honestly say I was not board at all.
  4. I used the information presented and applied it to my PANCE successfully.  There were a number of times on my boards that I utilized the memory tricks that John taught to answer the question correctly.
  5. Classmates of mine that struggled with retention said that the DVD they received was the first time a topic made sense to the point that they could remember it.

How I Used the DVDs

Now I will say that even though the CME4LIFE DVDs are fabulous they are not intended to be your ONLY source of information.  I used the DVDs as a supplement to the reading I did on the side.  I made sure to read about the topics covered on the PANCE/PANRE blueprint put out by NCCPA.  Then, when I finished an organ system, I would watch the CME4LIFE DVD.  I often picked up tricks to help remember things I had already read about and many times caught things I had missed in my reading.

Overall I really like the CME4LIFE PANCE/PANRE DVDs.  Now as a practicing physician assistant I am eyeing their options for CME including their self-assessment and performance improvement options.

I’d love to answer any specific questions you have!  Leave them in the comments below.  Thank you CME4LIFE for letting me review your awesome product!

Independence Day 2016

Happy 4th of July!

We are crossing our fingers that the wet weather of Missouri lets up in time to enjoy the festivities on post tonight!  The 4th of July is just another reminder about how lucky we are to be Americans.  While our country is no where near perfect, it is incredible to live somewhere where you are free to be yourself, can pursue your dreams, and design a life you love.  Thank you to the men and women in uniform who continue to keep us free and safe.  And in ending, here is my 4th of July outfit for you …

4th of July Fashion

Keeping it simple and causal because those two things are essential when wrangling tiny humans.  Happy 4th!
