Weaning From Breastfeeding

I can’t believe I am writing this post.  Why you ask?  Because it means I am nearing the end of what I once thought was an indefinite period of time: the year of breastfeeding.  It also means that my sweet little baby is a mere 10 days from being 1.  In a year she has gone from this …

Newborn Emmie

To this …

Ta Da Emmie

When I was pregnant I knew that I wanted to breastfeed my baby for as long as possible with one year being my goal.  In those early days where you feel more like a milk cow than a mom a year can seem like SUCH a long time.  In hindsight, it was a blink.  To breastfeed or not, as well as how long to do it, is a deeply personal choice for moms.  I am VERY proud of myself for (almost) exclusively breastfeeding Emmie for her first year of life.  I have to admit that my experience with breastfeeding has been very easy.  Emmie latched on right away in the hospital and our nursing relationship established itself really quickly.  My nipples never chapped and it honestly never hurt.  I also rarely dealt with engorgement and my supply has always been steady.

I have to admit that I haven’t done a lot of research or really inquired too much to my friends about weaning  Like much of my parenting style I figured we would just go with whatever felt natural and right for us at the time it felt good to do so.

Why do I think the time is now?

  • Emmie is too busy during the day to care about nursing
  • She never asks to eat
  • She chows down at all her meals and has an afternoon snack to boot

So last week we started weaning from breast-feeding.  The first nursing session was her post-morning nap one. Instead, she gets a sippy of cow’s milk with lunch.  Yes it’s 3 weeks early … I got permission 😉  The good news?  She LOVES cow’s milk.  Next week I plan on cutting another nursing session so we are down to 2 a day … first thing in the morning and before bed.

This is where things get iffy for me.  I am happy to continue these 2 nursing sessions for as long as Emmalyne wants.  I do not intend to be breastfeeding a 2 year old and in all actuality we could be fully weaned by November.  I am kind of just going with the flow and flying by the seat of my pants on this one.

My emotions about weaning from breastfeeding are multifaceted.

  • I am thankful that my body enabled me to reach my goal of nursing for one year.
  • I am sad that this period of Emmalyne’s and my relationship is coming to a close.
  • I am excited to finally TRULY have my body back to myself.

How did you wean your baby?  Any advice?

**Many of you expressed interest in my sausage and mushroom packets.  I will have the recipe up on the blog next week :)

Emmalyne: Month Eleven

Emmalyne: Month Eleven

Gulp.  My baby girl is 1 month away from being ONE.  I don’t know where time has gone.  I say that every month but seriously every second is fleeting.  These last eleven months have gone by in a blink.  I can’t believe I am sending out invites to Emmalyne’s First Birthday.  I need a hug.  If you’re new to Em’s journey, here’s where you can catch up:

HOW IS EMMALYNE MEASURING?

Your guess is as good as mine!  We will get a full update at her 1-year well visit next month.  She is still fitting in 6-12 month clothes but they are starting to get a tad snug.  6-12 month jeans are definitely too short though for her!  She is still long and relatively lean … minus her chunky thighs 😉

Emmalyne: 11 Months

PERSONALITY

Holy cow does this little girl have a BIG personality.  She cracks me up every single day.  She gets a mischievous glint in her eye when she knows she’s doing something she isn’t supposed to.  Emmalyne cocks her head to the side, clasps her hands, and squeaks at you when she is trying to be cute.  She loves to throw her head into my chest for a morning snuggle and kiss with her mouth wide open and drool hanging.  At eleven months old her huge heart shows and her love for her family is unmistakable.  She is the funniest, sweetest, and liveliest person I know.

BREASTFEEDING

STILL GOING.  It’s crazy for me to think I am one month away from reaching my goal of breastfeeding for a year.  She is currently nursing 3-4 times a day with a bottle of formula before bed.  The formula is so Chris can give her a bottle and have that special time with her and I just don’t want to pump anymore.  This month I plan on slowly introducing whole, organic cow’s milk into Emmalyne’s diet.  Our weaning plans are still coming together but as soon as they do I will be sharing them here :)

BABY LED WEANING

Emmalyne’s attention to food is amazing to me.  The girl seriously LOVES to eat.  A couple funny stories involving food.  The other day my mom, step-dad and I were out at breakfast.  I shared my scrambled eggs with Emmalyne and cut up some banana for her to munch on.  Both the eggs and banana were on the same plate.  Well, baby girl decided she didn’t want the banana.  SO she periodically picked every piece of banana off her plate, and put it on the table.  While I am shamed that my daughter doesn’t like bananas (I LOVE them), I am impressed that she can sort?

PLAY

I seriously LOVE playing with Em.  Who would think playing with such a little person would be SO MUCH FUN?  She loves to put things into containers and take them out.  I want to get her some stacking cups for her birthday.  Her favorite toy however is a stuffed soccer ball Chris bought from Ikea when I was pregnant.  She gets SO excited when it comes out and loves to roll it or throw it to us.  Emmalyne also loves anything that has to do with music and tends to shake her behind.  Baby girl is SO busy and the entire world is her playground.  She was pretty fascinated with the leaves she found during our photo shoot too 😉

TALKING

Em’s vocabulary is slowly but surely increasing and I am learning pretty quickly what words she is associating with things.  Her words include: mommy, daddy, Bailey, doggie, ball, bottle, penguin (seriously, pen-gin), hi, bye, and bottle.  Some of the sounds are similar to each other and her articulation isn’t the greatest, but hey, she’s only 11 months!  😉  Either way, she is communicating with us which is tons of fun.

Emmalyne: Month 11

TEETHING

Our teeth count holds steady at four.  She is gnawing on her fingers 24/7 though so maybe some more are around the corner. I feel like babies are constantly teething until they are 24.

SLEEP

Sleep is awesome around here.  Em is still going to bed promptly at 7PM and wakes up around 7AM.  We have been a little off since switching time zones twice but overall things are pretty consistent.  She is taking two naps a day.  A mid-morning snoozer and a mid-afternoon normally averaging about 1 1/2 hours each … sometimes a little less.

Emmalyne: 11 Months

Oh Emmalyne … I love you more than words could ever do justice.  You are the light of my world, my everything.  Every single day you teach me something new and how to love a little more.  I am so beyond blessed to be your mother.  I can’t believe we are one short month away from celebrating your first year of life.

I love you baby girl, you are my sunshine.

**A HUGE Happy Anniversary to my sister Heather and her husband Mark on their 16th year of marriage.  You guys have set an incredible example of what a great and lasting marriage is … one full of trust, love, and laughter.  I love you both SO much :)

Emmalyne: Month Ten

Emmalyne 10 Months
Double digits.  What has happened?  Yesterday she was a defenseless newborn and now she is a precocious and busy baby on the brink of toddlerhood.  Sigh.  If you’re new to Emmalyne’s updates here’s where you can catch up:

Emmalyne Month 10

HOW IS EMMIE MEASURING?

Emmie’s about 2 1/2 footballs long (unverified).  Not sure if her feet are growing longer, but they are chunkier. Finally, she’s now rocking a certified buddah belly.  Pretty sure she has an innie belly button when she hasn’t eaten and an outie afterwards.

Emmalyne Month 10

Emmalyne Month 10

PERSONALITY

Emmie now knows what she wants and is willing to talk about it, even if you can’t understand. She’s also much more abusive to her loving father using hand strikes to the face and eye scratching.  Pretty sure she’s have no trouble kicking the crap out of boyfriends in the future.

Emmalyne Month 10

BREASTFEEDING

I (Madeline) am going to take this one on since I am the one ahem doing it.  Breastfeeding is still going.  Emmie is nursing about 4 times a day with 1 bottle at night that Chris feeds her that we supplement with formula.  She nurses like a champ first thing in the morning.  Two of her nursing sessions are getting kind of lazy during the day and 1 of the afternoon ones is a good one.  I think she is just too busy to nurse during the day!  I am SO CLOSE to making my goal of a year and am contemplating going beyond that.  But that’s another post 😉

Emmalyne Month 10

Emmalyne Month 10

BABY LED WEANING

Probably the easiest way to do it, since she can pretty much eat anything and enjoy it.  I don’t appreciate the fact however, that she’s already costing me money when I take her out.  I figured mom’s boob milk would suffice as nutrition for at least a little while.  Instead I’m stuck ordering her chicken and fruit.

Emmalyne Month 10

PLAY

I’m settling on the fact she will be a volleyball player because she refuses to kick a soccer ball, but she’s already throwing it around like a rag doll.  Her favorite game of late is called “let’s open a drawer, bag, or cabinet, and pull everything out for the heck of it.”

TALKING

The debate is on trying to decipher her words.  She says what sounds like BAE!! in reference to Bailey but she also yells it at Trigger so not quite sure.  Most of everything else is blah blah blah,  to which my reply is usually “really??”

I (Madeline) have to add that Emmie clearly says daddy, mama, uh-oh, and hi.  I am convinced Bae is Bailey since she chases Bailey while saying it.  She said Trigger (tree tree) too.

Emmalyne Month 10

TEETHING

Emmie’s top two teeth came in the day after Maddy left for Phoenix with Emmie.  Kinda happy I didn’t have to deal with that. I can verify that the top two teeth are on the way down, and they’re big, and they hurt.

SLEEP

Thankfully she still sleeps through most of the night.  But no baby hates getting ready for bed more than her.  It’s a fight to the death, which she loses every time.

Emmalyne Month 10

Oh Chris … Emmie is lucky to have you as her daddy!  Thanks for taking the time and writing this for me :)

As always baby girl … we don’t know how we got so lucky to call you ours.  You make every day brighter, happier, and more fulfilling.  Thank you for giving us the privilege of being your parents.  We hope to only screw you up a little 😉

We love you baby girl.  You are our sunshine.

Munchkin Meals: Lunch

So … creativity when it comes to Emmie’s lunches is rather lacking.  Therefore I am selfishly thrilled that Brittany’s Munckin Meals this week is lunch-centric!

#MunchkinMeals Button

Emmie’s luches are pretty standard.  She eats a protein, fruit, and veggie with some dairy thrown in.

#MunchkinMeals Lunch 1

#MunchkinMeals Lunch 2

This week we are obviously still in Arizona so we don’t have everything we normally would.  She had chicken, turkey, avocado, cheese, blueberries, tomatoes, and peaches.

When we are home some of our other favorites are:

  • Grilled cheese
  • Morning star farms veggie patties
  • Green beans
  • Peas
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Peaches
  • Puffs

AND that’s where I fail.  Dinners are full of variety since she eats whatever we are eating.  Breakfasts and lunches are fairly boring.  How do you get creative with lunches??

I have some fun things coming up on the blog over the next few days including a zombie race recap from one of my best friends!  Stay tuned 😉

Munchkin Meals: Breakfast

Geez louise you guys … a three hour time difference is kicking both Emmie and I in the bum!  I went to bed at 9PM PST and Emmie work up at 3:30AM and was up off/on until she was up for good at 5:30.  She also cut a top tooth overnight so needless to say it’s been an interesting start to our vacation 😉

Lucky for you guys I remembered to take pictures of Emmie’s Munchkin Meals before we left Georgia.  Brittany is the fabulous host for this fun link-up!  This week’s focus was on breakfast and I apparently missed the memo.  I will be on the ball for next week’s focus on lunch 😉

#MunchkinMeals

BREAKFAST

Munchkin Meals Breakfast

Emmie enjoyed an egg scrambled with spinach and nutritional yeast, two small whole-wheat waffles, and some blueberries.

LUNCH

Munchkin Meals Lunch

Lunch consisted of some diced organic chicken, fresh, local peaches, and steamed broccoli.

DINNER

Munchkin Meals Dinner

Em scarfed down a Morning Star Farms veggie patty, mandarin oranges, and also some green beans.

This girl is seriously all about her food.  She loves the Baby Led Weaning approach we take with her and has been going great with it since 6 months.  I don’t think Emmalyne has a met a food yet that she didn’t like.  I have a hard time getting food on her tray fast enough!  It’s seriously so much fun introducing new tastes to her.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that she keeps an open palate 😉  We are having so much fun with my family here in AZ.  Yesterday my mom introduced Emmalyne to the juke box in our living room and baby girl was quite the mover and shaker 😉
