St. Simons Island

I am a beach lover.  I always have been.  I am happiest and most relaxed when I am by the water.  I grew up making trips out to San Diego to get my ocean fix since Arizona is obviously mainly desert and water is a relatively foreign concept.  Therefore I am absolutely thrilled to be living near the ocean for the first time in my life.  When we found out we were moving to Savannah, Chris and I made a pact that we would do our best to really EXPERIENCE as much of the area as possible.  I am glad to say that in the year we have lived here we have been doing just that.

This last weekend we visited a new-to-us beach in southern Georgia on St. Simons Island.  St. Simons Island is about an hour away from where we live just outside of Savannah.  With it being Interstate the whole way down there it didn’t take long at all.  Before we knew it we were on the beach and setting up for a beautiful day.

We got down to the beach around 10:30 AM before it was too crowded.  The tide was out which made for some awesome wading pools that were right up Emmie’s alley!  We set up camp with our friends and got down to business.

Beach Set Up

Emmie is truly a beach baby.  If she could be playing in the sand and jumping in the waves all day every day she would.  She is just like her mama and is her happiest when by the water.

Emmalyne St. Simon's Island

Pretty quickly we started getting hungry.  Emmalyne signaled that she was hungry by raiding our cooler.

Cooler Thief

Sometimes we pack our lunch for the beach but often times we are going somewhere new Chris and I like to try out a local restaurant.  We decided on ordering take-out from Gnat’s Landing Bar and Girll (yes – that’s how they spell it).  I ordered the grouper sandwich and it didn’t disappoint.  Their tartar sauce was among the best I have ever had!  The fries left something to be desired but the sandwich made up for it.

Emmie is fearless when it comes to the ocean.  She will literally walk right out into the waves.  She also loved sitting down in the waves and having them hit her in the face.  When we had enough of that, we would go sit in the wading pools and play with her bucket and shovel.  Chris laid down at one point and confused the heck out of Em.  She just kept saying “Daddy – what doing?”.  HA.

Saint Simons Island Family Day

This is probably one of our favorite beaches so far and may become or new norm.  While Tybee Island is less miles from us, the amount of time in the car is about the same.  Plus, this beach seemed more laid back and family oriented.  Also, there were bathrooms, showers, and parking was free.  Can’t beat any of that.

We ended up staying at the beach until about 3PM when a small rain shower rolled in.  Since Em hadn’t napped yet we figured it was a good time to load up and head home.  As soon as Emmalyne was in Chris’ arms heading to the car she started to fall asleep.  She was OUT within 5 minutes of being strapped in.  I call that a successful day 😉

These are the moments I live for and never want to forget.  At one point Chris and I realized that next summer we will get to bring both our girls to the beach and I just can’t wait for the memories.

Atlanta Children’s Museum + 5 Seasons Brewery

I am really excited to recap our quick trip to Atlanta over the weekend.  Believe it or not, this was the first time I really visited the area.  The only other times I had been in the city were for connecting flights or the Dirty Girl Mud Run!  We have been wanting to get up to the ATL for awhile now, mainly so I could go to IKEA, and the holiday weekend provde the perfect timing.

Friday morning we left bright and early to hit the road.  It’s about 4ish hours to the city from where we live just outside of Savannah and unfortunately an incredibly boring drive.  Luckily (or unluckily?) I did end up downloading Candy Crush and got addicted fast.  OOPS.  When we got to our hotel we unloaded, set up the pack-n-play in the bedroom and put the Emster down for a nap.  Chris and I snoozed ourselves in the separate sitting area to gear up for an afternoon of fun!

Our original plan was to hit the Atlanta Aquarium but unbeknownst to us it was everyone else’s plan too.  When we got there there were literally hundreds of people waiting to get in.  We made the executive decision to skip it and walked back down the street to the Atlanta Children’s Museum – Imagine It! –  instead.  It was a great choice!

Atlanta Children's Museum

The museum itself is a tad pricey ($12.75 per person) but they do offer a military discount of $3 off a ticket.  Additionally, the last hour of the day admission is discounted by $5.  Since we fell into the last hour it cost about $25 for all three of us!  I really think that at Emmalyne’s age an hour is the perfect amount of time to spend anywhere so this worked out well in our favor.

There were tons of awesome exhibits for Em to explore.  At the museum entrance there were cards available with ages on them suggesting activities based on child development.  Just like at the Phoenix and Hilton Head museums, Em had a blast in the grocery store section.  We didn’t score a cart until the end of our visit but when we did she was off like a rocket!  There was also a designated area for children 5 and under and a smaller one for 2 and under.  I loved the interactive art station, sand tables, and dress up areas too.  We seriously had a blast!

Atlanta Children's Museum

After our time at the museum was up we headed north of the city to run some errands and then meet Tina and her familt for dinner at 5 Seasons Brewery in Silver Springs.  I was so excited to finally get to meet Tina in person!  She is even sweeter in real life and her kids are even cuter.  Too bad mine decided she was over life and was the worst behaved child of all time (exaggeration).  However, she immediately liked Tina as we all walked into the restaurant ha.

Instant Friends

When I wasn’t outside dealing with a tantrum throwing child, I really enjoyed 5 Seasons.  Chris ordered a beer that I longingly looked at and I got the fish and chips for dinner.  Their tartar sauce is pretty darn good!  The food was tasty overall and the company was even better.  Already looking forward to meeting up with them the next time we are in town and hopefully Em won’t be overtired 😉

Sunday morning we ate breakfast at our hotel (a super nice La Quinta!) and headed back into the city to hit up IKEA.  We left with a full truck and crying wallets but got everything on our list for the playroom and Em’s big girl room … two projects I can’t wait to share with you!

Overall it was a whirlwind weekend with too many hours in the car but well worth it.  However, now I feel like I need a weekend to recover from my weekend 😉

A Perfect Sunday

Happy Monday friends!  I hope you all had an awesome weekend.  Good luck to all of you teachers who are going back to school today!  In case you missed it, here were my posts from the weekend:

Yesterday was just one of those days that was awesome.  I had planned on doing 7-miles with two of my girlfriends but alas both of them weren’t feeling well.  SO I headed out for a solo run.  I got out just as the sun was coming up.

I kept this run in and around my neighborhood.  I took a trail to the neighborhood next to us and ran out further until I hit the water.  It kind of amazes me that I get to run in such a gorgeous setting all the time.

Views from a long run

I love running with my friends but there is something about the silence and solitude of a solo run.  I tend to have some random thoughts throughout it.  I also got to enjoy nature …

Wildlife spotted:

  • 1 million + Fiddlers crabs
  • 8 squirrels
  • 1 snake (dead)
  • 1 worm
  • 5 off-leash dogs

I got back to the house just as Emmalyne was going down for a nap.  I was a hot, sweaty, happy mess.  My goal pace for the Savannah Rock-N-Roll Half Marathon is 10 minutes/mile and I kept mine at 9:44/mile yesterday.  Maybe I got this this year??

When I got home I spent some time doing foam rolling it out while wearing my Zensah compression sleeves and sipping some Nuun.  I got some questions about my foam roller on Instagram.  We got ours from Walmart for under $15!  LOVE it.

post-run recovery

The rest of the day I did a little bit of this …

study time

And went to the movies with Chris, Heather, and D.  We went and saw “The Campaign” while a babysitter watched Emmalyne and Grace.  It was seriously funny if you like Will Ferrell movies and Zach Galifianakis.  Then Chris and I came home and grilled in a torrential downpour.  It was ok though, it was worth it 😉

Shrimp kabobs and grilled vegetables

We capped off our day with our fantasy football live draft with our friends throughout the country.  I had the #1 draft pick this year and got … Aaron Rodgers.  I am a HUGE Packers fan but on top of that he’s the best quarterback in the league and likely to win me some FF games 😉

Emmalyne and I leave for Phoenix tomorrow so we got to get busy getting our booties in gear today.  Have a happy Monday!  Don’t forget to #BeKind 😉

Fitness Friday

Well today is finally Friday!  It’s a bit bitter sweet in our house … my mother-in-law leaves today after spoiling me with her nanny services for the last 9 days.  I spent the last 3.5 weeks with either my mom or Yon and have been pampered with ME time.  I am sad for her to leave but I am also excited to get back to normal.  I am also ready for a weekend with JUST Chris and Emmalyne.  We haven’t had one of those since June.  Seriously.

Since it’s Friday, it means it’s time for another round of Fitness Friday here at triple F.  It is also my Week 2 wrap-up of Best Body Bootcamp.  With Yon being here I was able to get some quality workouts in without the Emster.  While I love my little running buddy I also love just being able to do work.  Haha.

6 Mile Run

Sunday was my “optional cardio” day for Best Body Bootcamp.  I met Heather and Leslie Ann at J.F. Gregory and we busted out 6 miles.  I felt awesome.

I attended my first class at Awakening Yoga Studio in Richmond Hill.  It’s a cute little study and the owner Lisa is seriously awesome.  I did a warm summer vinyasa class and it made my whole week.  I am making doing a yoga class once a week one of my BBB goals.

3 Mile Solo Run

I hit the trail by my house and did a 3.5 mile run on my own.  I wore my Lululemon hydration belt again and seriously still love it.  I got a lot of questions asking if it rides up and my answer is no.  It stays in place on me.  I maybe adjusted it once the whole time.  It was also the perfect day for a run … cloudy, misting and cool.  When I got home I did the Best Body Bootcamp Workout B focusing on legs.  This week there was an extra set of “to fatigue” exercises and the last wall-sit nearly did me in.  Burned so good!

5x400m Repeats and Arms

Wednesday was speed work day for me for half-marathon training.  I did a 1 mile warm-up, 5×400 m repeats with 400m of recovery between interval, and a 1 mile cool-down for 4.5 miles total.  BAM.  Then I did Best Body Bootcamp Workout A focusing on upper body strength.

Today I am going to do the BBB interval workout and knock-out workout C to get my 3rd and final strength training day in for the week.

AND because it’s fun … I am participating (as much as I can/remember) in VEDA … Video Every Day in August.  Yesterday’s video is all about changes and what really matters to me … Make sure you subscribe to my YouTube to see them all :)

Weekend Recap

This weekend FLEW by … yikes!  Chris’ mom is in town so we jammed a ton into two days.  First, if you are just rejoining the blogsophere, here is some reading you might have missed:

Tybee Island Beach

We started our weekend off at my happy place … AKA Tybee Island!  It was a perfect beach day … not TOO hot and a nice breeze.  We scored parking by the pier for the first time too.  Yon (MIL) hadn’t been to the beach and ages so we were excited to show her our favorite weekend spot.  Emmie was a beach bum as usual 😉

Now that Emmalyne is mobile, taking her to the beach is even more interesting.  She is on the go from the moment we get there and we have to watch her like a hawk to see what she puts in her mouth next.  Needless to say sand gets consumed.  She also has a new affinity for sea shells.

Emmie Sells Sea Shells

Since we were out there during lunch we decided to pick some up “to go” from our favorite, Fannie’s!  I skipped my fish tacos (we had maid some the night before) in favor of a grilled Mahi Mahi sandwich!  It was SO good!  There is something to be said about having seafood on the beach … I think it is a must.

We also snuck in some family photos …

We headed back home around 2PM to shower and regroup before meeting Heather and D for dinner. FINALLY we managed to take some pictures together 😉

So In Love ...

Hot Moms

We headed downtown to River Street in Savannah without a real plan.  After being unable to make a decision, we finally decided on Tubby’s Tank House.  Our customer service experience from the hostess was kind of iffy.  Things just seemed off.  We waited a lot longer than anticipated for a table and by the time we sat down we were all starving.  We split the buffalo shrimp appetizer and warm crab dip.  Both were seriously awesome.  Chris and I shared a burger and crab legs for dinner … our own version of surf and turf.  Overall it was a great group date night sans children.  We are seriously lucky to have made such great friends here!

Sunday morning started bright and early with a 6 mile run … Sunday, Run Day! I picked up Heather and we headed over to J.F. Gregory park to meet my new friend Leslie Ann.  Leslie Ann’s husband just got assigned to Chris’ unit and I am seriously SO excited!  She and I have a ton in common and I am excited to get to know her better.  We kept a nice and easy pace … this is the furthest I have run since the Go! St. Louis  half marathon!

Sunday, Run Day

After getting hot and sweaty, Heather and I headed up to our favorite breakfast joint and met the husbands, girls, and Yon for breakfast.  I LOVE eating a big breakfast and love it even more after running.

Later in the afternoon Chris and I continued to take advantage of having a live-in babysitter and hit the movies.  We have seen like 3 movies together since Emmalyne was born … which is hard because we LOVE to go to the movies.  We ended up seeing The Dark Knight Rises and I have to say it didn’t disappoint.  I am a sucker for super hero movies and this is up there with my favorites.

We ended the weekend grilling grass-fed burgers + corn and settled in for an evening of watching the Olympics!  Another fabulous weekend in my eyes 😉

New fashion post coming later today so stay tuned 😉

How was your weekend?  Are you watching the Olympics?
