A Day in the Life as a Family Medicine PA

Happy Wednesday folks!  One of the best things about a long weekend is that the next week is short.  Super pumped that we are already halfway to Friday.  It’s been awhile since I shared a What I Ate Wednesday post with y’all and I figured it was also a great opportunity to give you a glimpse into what a day in my life is like.  I have shared a few of these in the past that you can check out at the end of the post to see how things have changed over the years.  I am officially into my 2nd week on my own practicing in Family Medicine and it’s been amazing so far!  Let’s get to it.

5:45AM  Alarm goes off.  I get to “sleep in” because I have a dentist appointment first thing in the morning.  It makes me laugh that this is sleeping in these days.  I feel a tiny person in bed next to me and see that Emmie came in at some point in the night.   She wakes up and I get her situated to watch a show while I make breakfast.  Breakfast tends to be my biggest meal of the day because I can’t guarantee a snack break before lunch.  My breakfast is an egg, egg whites, nitrite free bacon, 2 slices of raisin toast, and some blueberries.  A ton of coffee on the side.

WIAW - Breakfast

7:15AM  We are loaded into the car and are off.  I drop the girls off at school before heading to my dentist’s office.  I had a filling placed in March and have had some intermittent tooth sensitivity for the last week.  After Googling “root canals” (I know …. bad healthcare provider) I decided I should probably get it looked at.  Fortunately I don’t need one and instead he thinks it’s my sinuses cause pressure and tooth pain.  Go figure.

9:00AM  Arrive at work.  My work is letting me ease into my life as a provider and I only have 12 scheduled for today.  I spent some time last night looking up my patients so I already know what’s up.  Do a variety of annual wellness exams, sick visits, and follow-ups.  It’s a day where I am able to get snack in too which makes it a success!

WIAW - Snack

12:00PM  Wrap up my morning patients and finish charting.  Seriously – the electronic medical records take so. much. time.  I am still navigating our EMR so I am a tad slower.  Close out all my charts (#winning) and hit the break room for some lunch.  I planned ahead and had grilled chicken, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.

WIAW - Lunch

1:00PM  Back at it!  My afternoon is a lot heavier than the morning due to my missing my first hour of clinic.  More sick visits than chronic care this afternoon which keeps me busy.  I am still figuring out how to get my time with patients down and still get my charting done.  I get super busy in the afternoon and don’t have a chance to sit down.

5:15PM  Somehow I finish my charting only 15 minutes after the office closes.  I have a 30 minute drive home so I snack on a bag of Annie’s organic popcorn and call my sister for her birthday.  We chat for a bit and get caught up on each other’s lives.  I am very fortunate that even though my sister is 17 years older than I am that we are as close as we are.  I also chat with a good friend from PA school and get caught up with him.

5:45PM  Roll into the house and find the family in the basement watching “dragons”.  Spend some time with them and check on our container garden (more on that soon!) before heading back upstairs to finish dinner.  I had Skinnytaste’s Bolognese in the crockpot all day so all I have to do is make some noodles.  And yes – this is where my photos ended for the day.

7:00PM  Bathtime for the munchkins!  Chris and I switch off who puts who down each night and I have Bryn.  One of my favorite parts of the day is saying our nightly prayers with her.  Somehow I am always after “God bless book” and “God bless light” … THEN it’s “God bless mommy”.  She cracks me up.

7:30PM  Bryn is in bed and Chris and Emmie are reading so I clean up the kitchen and take a quick shower before sitting down to write this post.  Feeling pretty lame because I am already dreaming about getting into my bed.  Spend some time jotting down the things I need to do tomorrow and check on my patient list for the morning.  I feel pretty grateful that I can access our EMR from home so I can wrap some stuff up here and not stay at work late.

There you have it!  A pretty basic day in my life now.  Everyday is a little bit different in how it plays out but it’s fairly similar.  Normally I try to sneak a workout in at night but coming off the holiday weekend and 3 days of intense workouts I needed a day off.  Just means I have to break a sweat today.  Hope your Wednesday is off to a great start!

A Day in the Life: Surgery Rotation

It’s been awhile since I shared a day in the life post with you guys and since my daily life is different every rotation I thought I would share one while I am on surgery!  First off, I am on a really relaxed surgery rotation in terms of hours.  I am very grateful for this.  While the environment is intense and the expectations are sky high at least I know I will be off by 4PM every day.  This is not the case for many surgery rotations so if you’re a student I just want that out there 😉  Here we go!

5:00 AM – alarm goes off.  Today is an OR day so I have to leave the house by 6AM to get to work well before our first case.  I make a protein-packed breakfast so I know I can get through until a quick break between cases.  Counting my lucky stars I have no rounding to do.

6:45 – 8:30AM – get to work and check in with the circulating nurse and scrub tech to let them know I am there for the day.  First case starts at 7:15 and goes smoothly.  It’s a laparoscopic cholecystectomy so I get to first assist, help drive the camera, and help close with suturing.  Curse my cup of coffee for my shaky hands which makes it more challenging to suture.

8:30AM – Break between cases.  Go to the staff lounge and pound some water and grab a snack.  I mixed up a chocolate vegan Shakeology with almond milk, spinach, and pumpkin before leaving the house and it hits the spot!

Snack - Shakeology

9:00 – 10:30AM – case #2!  It’s like deja-vu because it’s another lap chole.  Basically do the exact same thing on repeat … this time my hands don’t shake as I suture so I count that as a win!  Finish the case and head back to the staff lounge for another quick break with some green tea and a banana.  We have one more case before lunch and it’s scheduled to take a tad longer.

Snack 2

11:00AM – 12:45PM – Last case of the morning, a bilateral mastectomy.  This is a pretty neat case to scrub in on.  I first assist again so imagine lots of retracting.  Thankful I didn’t work out the day before because my shoulders are killing me from constant contraction.  Side note, a study was done and surgeons/PAs burn ~3 calories a minute while just standing in surgery.  Any type of retracting increases that!  So basically now I know why I am tired at the end of the day 😉

1:00PM – 2:30 PM – head down to the clinic and eat lunch.  Read up on patients for the next day, chat with my preceptor, and chart my cases.  It’s a light day in clinic with no new patients in the afternoon so I am cut loose early!

2:45 – 4:00PM – Hit the gym!  Trying hard to actually complete an entire workout program and fit in fitness while on rotations.  I run 1.5 miles and then complete a whole body weight workout.  Feeling pretty strong and seeing some definition that wasn’t there before!

4:00 – 4:45PM – commute home!  Catch up with my mom since she had been on vacation and refuel with a pumpkin pie Quest bar which is DELICIOUS.  However, not one to leave in the car and let the sun warm up.  I typically do that with my other Quest bars but this one the outer coating melts.  Lesson learned.

Post-Workout Snack

5:00 – 7:00PM – Get home and jump in the shower.  Start prepping dinner while Chris picks the kids up from school.  He gives in and gets them McDonalds which is a once-a-month treat for them.  #SorryNotSorry.  They get home and play while Chris and I eat Jenn’s Shortcut Taco Soup (yum!) for dinner.  After dinner it’s dishes, clean up, and getting Bryn ready for bed.  She’s down by 7PM and Emmie gets some extra time to play.

7:00 – 9:00PM – Catch up on studying for my boards, answering emails, and getting things ready for the next day.  Put Emmie to bed at 8:00 and snuggle/scratch her back until she’s asleep.

9:00 – 10:00PM – Have a Facebook party for my Rodan+Fields business and enjoy sharing my love for these amazing products with others!  If you’re interested in a FB party and earning FREE product shoot me an email 😉

10:00PM – Do my nightly routine with washing my face with REDEFINE and hop into bed.  Lights out by 10:30PM and get ready to do it again tomorrow!

A Day In The Life + WIAW

I realize that it has almost been a year since I last wrote a “day in the life” post. EEK. So much has changed in our daily routine so I thought I would share! This is what our day was like yesterday with Emmalyne being 14 months old.  This post is also my “What I Ate Wednesday“.  Thanks Jenn for hosting!

6:30AM My alarm goes off. I ignore it.

7:00AM I actually get up. Let the dogs out, start making breakfast, and slam a cup of coffee while reading my favorite blog posts.

7:30AM I go get Em out of bed. She has been up for 15-20 minutes but happily talking.

8:00AM It’s time for breakfast.

WIAW Breakfast

I scrambled eggs with egg whites and topped it off with salsa, some fruit and a slice of whole wheat toast on the side.  Em has the same thing but isn’t quite so dainty.

Emmalyne Breakfast

After breakfast Em goes into the living room to watch an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse while I clean up the kitchen and wipe of the mess she’s left.  She is transfixed and clutches her Minnie tight while yelling “Mickey” at the TV.  I finish cleaning up the kitchen, make my bed, and change into workout clothes.

9:00AM  Go get Emmalyne ready for the day.  She hates having clothes put on so she tries to alligator death roll of the changing table.  I somehow manage to get her dressed.

9:30AM   Gym time for mom!  I did a 3.5 mile run on the treadmill and a quick CrossFit WOD while Em played in the nursery.

Wednesday Workout

11:00AM  Emmalyne and I met Heather for lunch at one of our favorite local places – Uptown Deli.  I got a salad with a scoop of chicken salad.  Emmie stole half my salad.  Girl had a thing for lettuce today.

WIAW Lunch

12:00-2:00PM  Emmalyne takes a nap.  I scurry around the house accomplishing my chores for the day, spend a few minutes on blog stuff, spend some time on my Army volunteering stuff, and frantically check things off my “to-do” list.

2:00 PM  Em is up and ready to go.  After a quick diaper change she and I share a snack and hang out on the couch for a few minute.

3:00PM  Chris is on half days right now so he actually gets home around this time.  We put Em in the BOB and leash the dogs and head out for a family walk.  When he’s not home, Em and I take the dogs on our own.  She LOVES helping hold the leash.

Dogs Walking

3:30-5:30PM  It’s play time!  Chris takes Em outside today.  Other days we read books, play outside, or work on puzzles.

Emmalyne Playing

Daddy and Emmie

5:30-6:30 PM  Typically this is when I cook dinner and we eat.  On good days Chris gets home between 6:00-6:30.  Some days it’s later.  Last night he and Em were on their own for dinner and he was in charge.  He said they had chicken tacos 😉

6:30 PM  Bath time and bedtime routine.  Now that means after bath Emmalyne gets dried with the hair dryer, brushes her teeth, reads a book, and gets her blanket.

7:00 PM  Prompt bedtime.  Christ typically rocks her for a few minutes and turns on the sleep sheep.  We put her in bed awake and she goes right to sleep.

Last night I had book club with some lovely Savannah ladies, including my girl Victoria.  Last night was less book and more club with grilled personal pizzas, wine, and white elephant gifts.  I got my first Trevis cup and it was a fantastic night!

Book Club Personal Pizzas

7:00-7:30 PM  While Chris puts Em to bed I clean up the kitchen and pick up the living room putting all of Em’s toys away and generally re-organize our lives to start again the next day.

7:30-9:00 PM  I finish whatever work I didn’t get done throughout the day.

9:00-10:00 PM  Chris and I watch whatever show is on the agenda for the day and spend some time together.

10:00 PM  I head to bed and call it a night.

**On days where we need to run errands we will do those in the afternoon after nap time.

**I eat snacks throughout the day but did not photograph them yesterday because I forgot.  Instead I included gratuitous photos of Em since those have been lacking lately.  You’re welcome 😉

Our days tend to follow the same, predictable pattern.  I try hard to keep Emmalyne’s nap time the same every day even though she is pretty flexible and goes with the flow.  While our days may seem repetitive, these are the moments I will cherish for a lifetime.
