Three Things Thursday #1

Who is READY for the weekend?!  Please tell me I am not along in my 36 hour countdown.  We are heading out of town for a couple of days and I am PUMPED.  This week has been pretty busy in the clinic as I have been slowly increasing my patient volume.  I am officially seeing my minimum amount of patients and still surviving so I am pretty pumped.  I have so many random things that I have been wanting to share with you and haven’t had the chance so I am starting a new series called “Three Things Thursday” so I can update you on my randomness!

1 / Grey’s Anatomy rocks my socks

Greys Anatomy

My Netflix subscription has been getting a lot of use since I graduated PA school and officially have a life again.  After the kids go to bed and my work is done for the night I wind down by watching an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.  It’s no shocker that I am fascinated by medical shows I am sure!  The best part is that Netflix just released episodes through season 12 so I can watch all the way through!  The girls have been LOVING the new episodes of Dragons: Race to the Edge.  Bryn loves her dragons (although her increase in biting MIGHT be related to her passion for the TV show).  Other great shows to catch are Orange is the New Black or Grace and Frankie.

2 / Backpacks as big as my child

Bryn Bryn

First can we discuss how BIG Bryn looks here?  I need someone to hold me.  My baby is growing up too fast and time needs to slow down.  She is really big into “I do it!” and likes to buckle herself into her carseat and insists on carrying her massive backpack into school.  Her independence is both amazing and frightening because the girl doesn’t have an ounce of fear in her (unless there’s a bug involved).

3 // Homegrown Tomatoes

My mother-in-law helped me plant a container garden (more on that another day) when she was here after we moved.  I am not known to have a green thumb.  In fact I am pretty much a death sentence to most plants.  However, I have managed to keep some of my plants alive and I got to pick my first tomato yesterday!  Emmalyne LOVES helping with our garden and has been in awe of the little produce we have grown.  It’s been a great learning opportunity for her!  Not to mention nothing tastes better than produce you grey yourself.

That’s all I have for you today!  I would love to hear one of your things for Thursday!

Happy Friday + Latest Netflix Obsession

Happy Friday friends!  I hope that the week treated you well and that you are as excited about the weekend as I am.  We have some big plans over here … it’s my best friend Jessica’s birthday so we will be out on the town tomorrow night celebrating her!  Other than that we have a pretty long “to do” list as our house officially goes on the market on MONDAY.  EEK!  If you know anyone moving to the Savannah area please send them my way 😉

In other news, I started Gilmore Girls on Netflix and I am officially obsessed.  How did I miss out on this show when it was out?!   I had no idea what I was missing!  I am nearing the end of season 1 and I am absolutely loving the show.

I think part of the reason I love it so much is because I was raised by a single mom. While my mom was certainly no Lorelai I can totally relate to the special bond that she and Rory share.  I truly am enjoying this series and am glad that all the episodes are available for me to stream!  Did you know that they are going to be doing a special reunion on Netflix too??  I am pumped!

Any-who … keeping it short and sweet today!  I have a long busy day in the clinic before sweet freedom commences :)  Happy Friday!

Date Night on a Budget

Happy Monday folks! Can you believe today is the last day in August?!  Holy smokes.  The year is FLYING by which means that we are inching closer and closer to BIG things for our family.  Since we have those big things (graduation, licensure, moving, etc.) on the horizon, Chris and I are trying to stick to a better budget.  We kind of budgeted willy-nilly in the past but we are buckling down these next 7 months to save as much as we can.  One of the areas we are trying to reign in is eating out.  Now, that isn’t something we are going to completely cut out because goodness knows that we need to get out of the house on our own occasionally.  BUT we can do better in that arena.  So this weekend we decided to do a date night at home instead.

So last night Chris fired up the grill and made us the most delicious steaks and king crab legs.  While it was certainly a decadent meal our protein cost $20 due to sales which is less than one entree if we were going out.  And it was amazing.

Surf and Turf

Since we ate our meal while the kiddos were still up I did end up losing an entire crab leg to Bryn.  Apparently she has good taste 😉  Once the kids went to bed Chris and I snuggled in to the couch and tuned in to Netflix.  Our latest guilty pleasure has been HGTV and we were super stoked (nerdy I know) to see that Property Brothers had a bajillion episodes available for our viewing pleasures.

Property Brothers Netflix

Overall it was the perfect way to end our weekend.  They may have been some chantilly cake too 😉  I am off for my LAST week of psych!  Have a great Monday!

How do you date on the cheap?

All the Ponies

This post is part of my ongoing partnership with Netflix as part of their #StreamTeam.

Emmie has a new obsession y’all.  A couple of months ago when we went on our beach trip I randomly bought Emmie a My Little Pony stuffed animal and it instantly became her favorite.  She named her “Gina” and everywhere Emmie went Gina had to come along too.  One day Em was playing with my phone and somehow found a YouTube channel where they made various ponies out of Play-Doh and the world of My Little Pony was discovered.  She learned all the names of the different ponies and insisted on watching YouTube to see them on there.  Her collection of ponies also began to grow.

Now Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Apple Jack, and Twilight Sparkle (formerly Gina) are her BFFs which is nostalgic for me because I too loved My Little Pony growing up!  What I don’t love however is the YouTube fascination.  So I turned to my Netflix account to see if there were episodes of the TV show for her to watch instead of the weird YouTube channels full of adults playing with Play-Doh.  Fortunately Netflix saved the day!

Now Em and I can enjoy an episode here and there together!  While I am working harder on limiting the amount of time she gets in front of a screen, having an option for her that is NOT YouTube is fantastic!  Plus I have to admit I enjoy watching them too 😉

What “blast from the past” things are you seeing resurface?

Documentaries I Want to Watch

Who doesn’t love a good documentary?  Recently Chris and I have gotten sucked into the documentary “The Fighting Season”, a documentary about units at war in Afghanistan.  It’s especially interesting to both of us because one of the units they are following in this series is stationed exactly where Chris was on his deployment.  Like to the point that he recognizes some of the Afghanis on the show!  It’s been fascinating to get a glimpse into what his life was like over there.

This is the first documentary we have watched together and honestly the first one I have watched in awhile.  Since it is so fascinating I decided to make a list of other documentaries I want to watch sometime this summer.  Fortunately Netflix has a ton streaming right now so the possibilities are endless.

1.  Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

The science geek in me can’t wait to watch this series after my resident on Internal Medicine recommended it.  It’s surprisingly produced by Scott McFarlane who is also the creator of Family Guy.

2.  How to Survive a Plague

This documentary looks at the early days of AIDS and was up for the Best Documentary Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards.

3.  The Invisible War

This is an interesting documentary about the incidence of rape in the military.  I have already heard stories on my OB/GYN rotation that just make me mad and sad in regards to this.  I definitely want to check it out.

4.  Bigger Faster Stronger

Chris already watched this documentary and it’s about the use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs here in the US.

5.  Undefeated

I think Chris would really like this documentary too because it’s a feel-good story about a high school football team from Tennessee who overcome odds on and off the field.  It also won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

6.  Everest

After re-reading “Into Thin Air” for the 1000th time I now want to watch Everest which is the documentary that was being filmed during the 1996 climbing season.  I had this crazy dream in high school to do high altitude medicine on Mount Everest and I am pretty sure watching a documentary is the closest I will ever come haha.

What is your favorite documentary?
